Mary Heath is a first-year PhD student at UIC. As an undergraduate, she attended The George Washington University, where she earned her B.A. double-majoring in Communication and Dance and minoring in LGBT/Sexuality Studies. She then brought this interdisciplinary interest back to her home state of Arizona, where she completed her M.A. in Communication Studies at Arizona State University.
Mary discovered an interest in critical research by combining her passion for arts and narrative media to ASU’s focus on advocacy. Her work explores the depiction of specific bodies in storytelling with a focus on the representations of gender, sexuality, race, and disability. Beyond the content of a piece of art itself, Mary is interested by narrative adaptations and the impact of presenting a story through any specific medium. Her work has been presented at the Pop Culture Association’s national conference.
