About
Ethan Long (he/him) joined the Communication PhD program in Fall 2023. He is a first-generation PhD student with a background in interpersonal communication and communication and technology. He received his BA in Communication from the University of South Florida in 2020. Shortly after, he moved to Chicago to attend DePaul University, where he received a MA in Communication and Media in 2022.
Ethan's research interests include humor and social media, political extremism and online communities, and identity in the context of technologically mediated communication. Specifically, he is interested in the weaponization of humor by hate groups to radicalize others, antagonize vulnerable populations, and encourage violence.
