Michel Maksimova is a PhD student in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Michel’s primary research area is queer game studies. They aim to study and better understand how queer audiences make meaning when interacting with game texts and systems or within gaming-related communities. Michel’s other developing research interest is in Russian digital media, particularly Indigenous media and their relationship with Russia’s colonial power. As a Russian person themselves, Michel seeks to use their lived experience and connections to the country to contribute to scholarship around decolonial approaches in Russian digital media.
